On 13/10/2023, the team of the Janayin Babel Organization for Environmental
Protection (JEP) conducted a field patrol in Tigris Park in the Qayyarah subdistrict - Nineveh Governorate. The aim of the patrol was to introduce the organization, its work and activities in the region, in addition to distributing awareness brochures about protecting the environment and its importance to human life, as well as the relationship of the environment to mental health. The facilitators also explained the risks of pollution and its impact on people’s mental and physical health. Some pictures and illustrations of the environment and its importance to humans were presented.
The awareness sessions were for families present in the park as well as for children.
The patrol was very useful, as one of the women said that she was very happy to see an organization specialized in protecting the environment in light of the high rate of air pollution, the lack of afforestation, and the many diseases caused by pollution. One of the families also requested from JEP to contribute in planting trees in the park and other areas around Qayyarah.
Our team thanked the participants for their attentive listening.

On September 29, 2023, the Janayin Babel Org. for Environmental Protection (JEP) team, in cooperation and participation with volunteers from other organizations, distributed winter clothes to needy women (widows and divorcees) and children in the Shoura sub-district. This initiative came after assessing the needs of those families who need winter clothes due to poverty and the inability of these needy families to buy clothes, especially with the arrival of the cold winter season. Clothes were distributed to approximately 200 children and 140 women in need. One of the women included in the distribution says, “I am very happy since I am included in the distribution process because we and our families suffered a lot last winter due to the lack of clothes and our inability to buy clothes due to poverty. But today we are happy with our children with these clothes that were distributed by the JEP organization noting that we have not received any aid since we left the displacement camps (for approximately two years)”.
A mother of a beneficiary child said, “Thank you, JEP Organization. You have brought a smile to our faces and warmth to our hearts. We are very grateful to you for distributing clothes at this critical time. These clothes will contribute to making our winter more contained and comfortable.”
Although the JEP Organization specializes in the field of the environment and its protection, it contributes to protection activities other than the environment to support people in need because they are part of the environment and the environment is part of them. Also, such activities help build the relationship and enhance the community’s confidence and trust in the organization, which contributes
|
|
to opening up space in the future to provide greater awareness or environmental contributions to the community. This will make it easier for the JEP organization to be more accepted in society.

implementing these contributions was discussed (from 2021 to 2030), in addition to the implementation requirements of the document (NDC), as it is expected to reduce between 1% - 2% of Iraq’s total gas emissions according to national greenhouse gas inventories, and 15% when financial and international support is provided.
Iraq's priorities under the Iraqi National Contributions Document (NDC) were also discussed, identifying the main objectives and projects that must be implemented to meet these contributions.
In addition, the plans developed by the Iraqi government to implement the provisions of the NDC agreements in cooperation with the public and private sectors were discussed, and the efforts that must be made at the international and local levels to ensure the achievement of these goals were discussed.

Today, on 21/10/2023, the JEP team presented a training and awareness session on
“The Environment and its Relationship with Humans” to a group of young people in Al-Houd village – Qayyarah Sub-district. The aim of the session was to educate society about the importance of the environment, its relationship with humans, and its preservation. In addition to the risks that can be caused by neglecting the environment and increasing pollution and gas emissions, which in turn increase the Earth’s temperature and increase sea level, causing natural disasters such as floods and storms.
It was clear that the participants were ignorant of the risks of desertification, lack of afforestation, and increased cutting of trees that contribute to destory the environment. During the session, the participants assured that society as a whole must contribute to protecting the environment, not just government institutions, because preserving the environment is everyone’s responsibility. They also confirmed that they will participate in afforestation campaigns in their village with the JEP organization, which will begin soon. Their participation in the lecture was very effective in terms of raising awareness of the rights and duties of citizens towards the environment and preserving the nation’s natural heritage. “The earth is the place in which we all share, so its natural resources must be preserved.”
In the end, the participants asked the JEP organization to intensify awareness sessions on environmental preservation and protection and to contribute to this, because society is ignorant of all these matters, especially since there is no organization in southern Mosul that works on environmental protection other than JEP.

The Janayin Babel Organization for Environmental Protection (JEP) participated in the international workshop entitled (Estimating the amounts of carbon dioxide and its relationship to crude oil and climate change) on Friday, November 3, 2023 at 9:30 pm via the Zoom platform. This workshop was organized by the Al-Ru’a Foundation for Education and Development In cooperation with the Department of Atmospheric
Sciences of the Iraqi Ministry of Environment, the International Union of Universities, Al-Naqa Society for Environmental Protection, and Hadara Company. The session, presented by included various topics, including: emissions from oil (emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels) and greenhouse gases and their impact on climate change (increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, including CO2, cause an increase in the effectiveness of global warming. This leads to a rise in Temperatures on the Earth's surface and climate change have a significant impact on the environment, ecosystems, and global economies. Among these impacts include an increase in temperatures, sea level rise, and the frequency of extreme weather events such as floods and droughts. In addition to the need to reduce CO2 emissions to reduce the impact of crude oil on climate change, countries and societies need to adopt strategies to reduce CO2 emissions. This can be done by enhancing energy efficiency, adopting renewable energy sources, enhancing public transportation, developing clean technology, afforestation, and raising awareness and education.
The workshop was very important and useful, which increased the participants’ interest and knowledge in the environment and working seriously to protect it.

On 02/11/2023, the JEP team planted trees in the Central Library Garden in Al-Shoura subdistrict, north of Nineveh Governorate. Some girls contributed to the farming process to encourage the girls to work together and cooperate among themselves, and to remind them of the importance of preserving our environment and making it green, which will reflect positively on our lives. The goal also was to improve the appearance of the library garden and enhancing awareness of the importance of nature, environment and teamwork. Although there is no support for the JEP organization and its activities are self-supported, this does not prevent us from contributing even if just a little to protecting the environment. JEP will take part in future compaigns of tree-planting with other partners and the community.
